Characteristics of multiple uterine fibroids

Characteristics of multiple uterine fibroids

Uterine fibroids are often multiple, and different types of fibroids (such as pedunculated subserosal fibroids, subserosal fibroids, submucosal fibroids, pedunculated submucosal fibroids, cervical fibroids, intramural fibroids, etc.) can occur on the uterus at the same time, which is called multiple uterine fibroids.

1. Intramural fibroids

Fibroids are located within the uterine muscle wall and are surrounded by myometrium, accounting for approximately 60% to 70%.

2. Subserosal fibroids

Subserosal fibroids grow toward the uterine serosa and protrude from the surface of the uterus. The surface of the fibroid is only covered by the uterine serosa, accounting for about 20%. It can include the following types:

Pedunculated subserosal fibroids: The fibroid body continues to grow toward the serosa surface, with only one pedicle connected to the uterus, which is called a pedunculated subserosal fibroid.

Broad ligament myoma: If the myoma is located on both sides of the uterine body and grows toward the side of the uterus and protrudes between the two layers of the broad ligament, it is a broad ligament myoma.

It should also be noted that due to the blood supply and nutrition of the pedicle blood vessels, if there is insufficient blood supply, the tumor may become necrotic; if the pedicle is twisted and broken, the tumor will fall off and form a free myoma.

3. Submucosal fibroids

Myomas grow toward the uterine cavity, protrude from the uterine cavity, and are covered only by the mucosa, accounting for about 10% to 15%. Submucosal myomas are prone to form pedicles, which often cause uterine contractions and are squeezed out of the uterine cavity and protrude into the vagina.

4. Cervical fibroids

Cervical fibroids are a special type of uterine fibroids, with an incidence rate of about 10%. They can cause the cervical canal to narrow and deform, affecting the passage of sperm.
