Causes of Acute Bartholinitis

Causes of Acute Bartholinitis

Acute Bartholinitis is an inflammation caused by infection of the Bartholin's glands. Common causes include bacterial infection, poor local hygiene, sexual transmission, etc. Treatment requires anti-infection, local care or surgical intervention depending on the cause.

1. Bacterial infection

The most common cause of Bartholin's gland inflammation is bacterial infection, especially staphylococci, streptococci or Escherichia coli. These bacteria may enter the gland through a break in the vulvar skin or retrograde infection of the urethra, causing inflammation. For treatment, doctors usually prescribe antibiotics, such as cephalosporins, amoxicillin or metronidazole. The specific drug should be selected based on the results of bacterial culture.

2. Poor local hygiene

Improper cleaning of the vulva area may lead to bacterial growth and increase the risk of infection. It is recommended to wash the vulva with warm water every day and avoid using irritating lotions. Wear cotton underwear and keep it dry, and avoid wearing tight clothing for a long time to reduce local friction and moist environment.

3. Transmission through sexual intercourse

Unclean sexual behavior may bring pathogens into the Bartholin's glands and cause infection. Preventive measures include using condoms, keeping a fixed sexual partner, and cleaning up immediately after sexual intercourse. If infected, sexual intercourse should be suspended until the inflammation completely subsides to avoid worsening of the condition.

4. Trauma or surgery

Trauma or surgery in the vulva area may damage the Bartholin's glands and increase the risk of infection. You must strictly follow the doctor's instructions after surgery, keep the wound clean and dry, and use antibiotics to prevent infection if necessary.

5. Influence of other diseases

Patients with diabetes or immune system diseases are more likely to develop Bartholinitis due to decreased resistance. Controlling underlying diseases and enhancing immunity are the key to prevention. In terms of diet, you can increase the intake of foods rich in vitamin C and zinc, such as citrus fruits, nuts, etc.

The treatment of acute Bartholinitis should be combined with the cause and symptoms. Mild cases can be relieved by antibiotics and local care, while severe cases or repeated attacks may require surgical drainage or gland removal. If symptoms such as vulvar redness, swelling, pain or fever occur, you should seek medical attention in time to avoid delaying treatment.
