The causes of amenorrhea are very complex, including genetic factors, neuropsychiatric factors, immune factors, endocrine factors, tumor factors, trauma and drug effects, etc. According to the clinical classification standards of the World Health Organization (WHO), amenorrhea is divided into seven types:

Type I: Hypothalamic and pituitary failure. Characterized by significantly decreased gonadotropin and estrogen, and normal prolactin.

Type II: Hypothalamic and pituitary dysfunction. Characterized by normal or irregular gonadotropin and prolactin, decreased estrogen, and menstrual disorders (luteal deficiency, anovulation, amenorrhea).

Type III: Ovarian failure, characterized by increased gonadotropin.

Type IV: congenital (or acquired) reproductive tract diseases, such as congenital malformations, uterine amenorrhea

Type V: Hyperprolactinemia with pituitary tumor, characterized by hyperprolactinemia (lactation or non-lactation), significantly low gonadotropin and estrogen, pituitary tumor, and menstrual disorders (luteal deficiency, anovulation or amenorrhea).

Type VI: Hyperprolactinemia without pituitary tumor. Characterized by hyperprolactinemia (lactation or no lactation), no pituitary tumor, significantly decreased gonadotropin and estrogen, and menstrual disorders (luteal deficiency, anovulation or amenorrhea).

Type VII: Amenorrhea with pituitary tumor. It is characterized by pituitary tumor, significantly decreased gonadotropin and estrogen, amenorrhea, with or without other pituitary hormone abnormalities.
