The busy schedule of office workers and the prevalence of dual-income families are factors that contribute to the trend of eating out. The latest survey by the National Health Service of the Department of Health shows that the proportion of people eating out at least 5 days a week has increased year by year, with up to 66% of respondents eating out for lunch. In addition, without good dietary choices, up to 82% consume less than 3 servings of vegetables and 2 servings of fruits per day, which may increase their health burden.

Last year, the National Health Administration conducted a nationwide survey on workplace health promotion and tobacco prevention. A stratified random sampling was conducted based on the proportion of the employed population structure in counties and cities and the Directorate-General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics, Executive Yuan. A total of 6,065 samples completed the questionnaire and telephone interview. It was found that the average number of days for eating out for breakfast, lunch, and dinner was 4.01 days, 4.50 days, and 2.22 days, respectively. The proportion of employees interviewed who ate out for breakfast, lunch, and dinner more than 5 days a week was 54.1%, 66.7%, and 27.3%, respectively. Compared with the results of the 2009 survey, the number of days for eating out and the proportion of people eating out have increased.

The "Daily Dietary Guidelines" recommend that the Chinese people consume 3 servings of vegetables and 2 servings of fruits each day. However, 82.9% of the employees surveyed did not meet the guidelines. In terms of gender, the situation of men not eating enough fruits and vegetables was particularly serious, reaching 86.9%, while the situation for women was 78.6%. Both proportions were higher than the 2000 survey.

The National Health Administration calls for a balanced diet to promote health. It recommends that office workers who cannot avoid eating out should choose the food they eat out wisely, including:

  • Less oil: Try not to buy fried food, choose to cook food by steaming, boiling or baking; do not pour gravy, sesame oil, salad dressing or mayonnaise on blanched vegetables or lettuce to reduce fat intake.

  • Less salt: Buy less pickled food and reduce the use of extra dipping sauces (soy sauce, ketchup, pepper salt, etc.); do not choose pickled, smoked, or braised dishes. You can use sourness and spices (star anise, pepper or vanilla) to increase the flavor; when taking out food, ask the merchant to add less salt, soy sauce and other seasonings.

  • More grains: Choose whole grain staple foods, replace white rice with whole grain rice or brown rice, and it is best to consume at least 1/3 whole grain foods every day.

  • Eat more fruits and vegetables: Order one less meat dish and one more half-meat or vegetarian dish at each meal; bring your own fruit or buy fresh fruit; use fruit or vegetable bars instead of snacks; for breakfast, choose sandwiches or burgers with vegetables and fruits to increase fiber intake and feel fuller.
