Why is menstrual blood black?

If menstrual blood is black, it may be a physiological phenomenon, or it may be caused by cervical stenosis or pelvic tumor.

1. Physiological phenomena:

If the menstrual blood is black on the first day of menstruation, it is mainly because the fluctuation of hormone levels in the body causes the endometrium to shed at different times, resulting in black blood. The color will gradually turn red on the 2nd to 3rd day of menstruation. During menstruation, the venous blood has low oxygen content and is dark red. The color of menstrual blood is generally darker than venous blood. After the blood is discharged, it will be oxidized by air in the vagina, causing the blood to be black.

2. Cervical stenosis:

Congenital cervical stenosis is often accompanied by uterine hypoplasia; it may also be caused by drugs and surgery. The cervical canal is narrow, and menstrual blood cannot be discharged in time, so it will be deposited in the uterine cavity, turning into old bleeding, and the color will turn black.

3. Pelvic tumors:

It is a mass formed by abnormal proliferation of pelvic organs. When pelvic tumors compress the uterus, it can also cause menstrual blood flow to be blocked, leading to blood congestion and darkening of the color. Oral anti-inflammatory drugs such as amoxicillin capsules, levofloxacin hydrochloride capsules, dexamethasone acetate tablets, etc. can be taken.

In addition to the above situations, uterine cold and blood stasis can also cause menstrual blood to be black. If the patient encounters this situation, he should go to the hospital for diagnosis and examination as soon as possible and receive treatment under the doctor's advice.
