What are the causes of uterine fibroids? Is uterine fibroids serious?

Uterine fibroids appear as solid spherical masses with smooth surfaces and harder texture than the myometrium, with a clear boundary from the surrounding muscle tissue. The fibroids compress the surrounding muscle wall fibers to form a pseudocapsule. So, what are the causes of uterine fibroids? Are they serious?

Causes of uterine fibroids 1: Uterine fibroids are an estrogen-dependent tumor. Estrogen is the main factor that promotes the growth of fibroids. Fibroids rarely occur before puberty in women. Fibroids grow as estrogen increases during pregnancy and decrease as estrogen levels decrease after menopause. These phenomena confirm the relationship between the growth of uterine fibroids and estrogen. Other factors, such as progesterone and growth factors, also play a role in the etiology of uterine fibroids.

Cause 2 of uterine fibroids: Genetics of uterine fibroids. It is believed that somatic mutation is the initial event in the formation of fibroids, and cytogenetics consistently confirm that uterine fibroids have chromosomal structural abnormalities.

Cause 3 of uterine fibroids: uterine fibroids are tissue proliferation. At present, there is no consensus on the origin of uterine fibroid tissue. Some people believe that it is caused by the proliferation of immature uterine wall smooth muscle cells, and each uterine fibroid comes from a single cell.

It has been found that immature smooth muscle cells appear in the fetal uterus at 18-20 weeks of gestation. It is speculated that the occurrence of human uterine fibroids may come from undifferentiated mesenchymal cells in the uterus, which proliferate under certain pathological conditions and differentiate into smooth muscle cells to form uterine fibroids. Multiple uterine fibroids may be multi-source monoclonal tumors formed by multifocal latent cells in the myometrium.
