Do not over-treat cervical erosion

Do not over-treat cervical erosion

Many women have many misunderstandings about cervical erosion, thinking that cervical erosion means that the cervix is "rotten", so they blindly treat it, which causes unnecessary harm.

In fact, cervical erosion is not a single disease, but a symptom, which is medically known as "cervical columnar epithelium ectopia". Simple "cervical erosion" is very common in women of childbearing age. It is mainly manifested by the shedding of the epidermis of the external os of the cervix and its replacement by another type of epithelial cells at the os of the cervix. Because the new epithelium covering the surface is very thin, even the blood vessels and red tissue underneath can be seen. It looks like real erosion, but it is actually a normal "stress" response that occurs when hormones surge in women's bodies.

The harm of cervical erosion has been exaggerated in some clinical treatments. Many women believe that cervical erosion will lead to a high incidence of cervical cancer. Therefore, in some non-standard hospitals and clinics, overtreatment is very prominent: many patients have received treatments such as LEEP knives, which not only bring economic burdens but also physical harm. In fact, cervical erosion has no direct relationship with cervical cancer. The main cause of cervical cancer is persistent infection with carcinogenic human papillomavirus.

Therefore, women with cervical erosion do not need to panic too much. If there is no increased secretion, contact bleeding, or concurrent infection, generally no treatment is required.
