Cervical erosion is not really erosion

Cervical erosion is not really erosion

Cervical erosion is not an independent disease, but a manifestation of chronic cervicitis. For a long time, cervical erosion has troubled many women, and many people are terrified of it. From a literal point of view, people often understand it as cervical erosion, and treatment for it only begins after symptoms appear. These are all misunderstandings about cervical erosion.

Superficial necrotic defects of the skin and mucous membranes are called erosions when they are limited to the mucosal surface; deeper necrotic defects become ulcers when they exceed the mucosal base. Cervical erosion refers to the shedding of the epidermis at the external cervical os and its replacement by another type of epithelial cells at the cervical os. Because the new epithelium covering the surface is very thin, even the blood vessels and red tissue underneath can be seen, which looks like real erosion, so it is called cervical erosion. Therefore, cervical erosion is not erosion in the true sense. The correct term should be cervical columnar epithelial ectopia. Simple cervical columnar epithelial ectopia is a physiological phenomenon.

Cervical erosion has certain hazards, such as causing cervical polyps, cysts, pelvic inflammatory disease, adnexitis, and moderate and severe cervical erosion can even lead to infertility. Therefore, it should be taken seriously. Once you suspect that there is a problem with the cervix, you should go to a regular hospital for examination and treatment in time. However, it should be noted that there is currently an over-treatment of the so-called "cervical erosion". In addition to some misleading information, this phenomenon is also related to the lack of medical knowledge among women. Therefore, women should correctly understand and treat cervical erosion.
