The disease is caused by the infection of Trichomonas vaginalis, which consumes the glycogen in the vagina, destroying the self-cleaning defense function of the vagina, and secondary bacterial infection.

The incubation period of trichomonas vaginitis is 4 to 28 days. There are small red particles or petechiae on the vaginal mucosa. The pH value is higher than normal. There is a large amount of yellow-green or gray foamy secretions flowing out of the vagina, which has a fishy smell and is sometimes mixed with a little blood or purulent. The secretions irritate the vulva and cause itching. The vulva becomes red, or even inflammatory ulcers appear. Some are caused by moisture and abrasions and can spread to the genital folds. There is pain during sexual intercourse, and there may be symptoms such as urinary pain and frequent urination. Trichomonas vaginitis can be complicated by infertility.
