Diagnosis of cervicitis

Diagnosis of cervicitis

Cervicitis is a common disease in women of childbearing age, and there are two types: acute and chronic. Acute cervicitis often coexists with acute endometritis or acute vaginitis, but chronic cervicitis is more common. There are four main points for the diagnosis of cervicitis. The main clinical manifestations are increased leucorrhea, which is sticky mucus or purulent mucus, sometimes accompanied by or mixed with blood.

Diagnosis of cervicitis

Diagnosis of cervicitis

1. Typical clinical manifestations.

2. Gynecological examination: Acute inflammation can cause cervical congestion and edema, or erosion, with purulent secretions discharged from the cervical canal, and pain when the cervix is touched. Chronic cervicitis can cause cervical erosion, hypertrophy, polyps, glandular cysts, and ectropion to varying degrees, or purulent secretions at the cervical opening, and the cervix is hard when palpated. If there is cervical erosion or polyps, there may be contact bleeding.

3. Cervical smear shows Pap grade II.

4. For patients with more serious conditions, cervical biopsy can be performed to confirm the diagnosis. 5. It is difficult to distinguish cervical erosion or polyps from early cervical cancer. The latter is harder, more fragile, and more prone to bleeding. Cancer cells must be found by cervical scraping. If necessary, colposcopy and cervical tissue biopsy can be performed for differentiation.

Types of cervicitis

Cervical erosion

This is the most common type of chronic cervicitis. It manifests as a fine granular red area in the cervical vaginal part of the external cervical opening.

Cervical hypertrophy

Due to the long-term stimulation of chronic inflammation, the cervix becomes congested and edematous, and the glands and stroma proliferate, causing the cervix to hypertrophy to varying degrees.

Cervical polyps

Under the long-term stimulation of chronic inflammation, the cervical mucosa proliferates locally. Due to the rejection effect of the uterus, the proliferating mucosa gradually protrudes from the cervical opening, forming polyps.

Cervical gland cyst

Also known as Nabot's cyst, or Nabot's cyst for short, it is a small bluish-white cyst that protrudes from the surface of the cervix.

Endocervicitis

That is endocervicitis. The inflammation is limited to the endocervical mucosa and the tissues underneath. Clinically, the vaginal part of the cervix is smooth, but the cervical opening is congested or blocked by purulent secretions.
