Gastric reduction surgery reduces hunger and Baiyun loses 23 kg

A "super obese person" weighing 300 kilograms has finally undergone weight loss surgery in the country. The E-Da Hospital in charge of this medical task will prepare to perform sleeve gastrectomy and intestinal bypass surgery. Last year, artist Bai Yun also underwent sleeve gastrectomy surgery, successfully lost 23 kilograms and transformed into a handsome man. If sleeve gastrectomy is calculated based on a BMI of 22 above the ideal body weight, an average of 50% of excess weight can be lost in the first year after surgery, and 60% in the second year. This can be considered a safe weight loss surgery.

According to the Asia-Pacific standard, when the weight exceeds the ideal weight, BMI ≧ 32 and is combined with obesity-related diseases, or BMI exceeds 37 and has become harmful to health, it is called "morbid obesity" and surgical intervention should be considered. Currently, the most common weight loss surgeries include: gastric bypass, gastric banding, and sleeve gastrectomy (also known as gastrectomy or gastric reduction surgery). Among them, gastric banding is the safest, gastric bypass has the strongest effect, and sleeve gastrectomy is in between.

Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy is safer and has a lower rate of complications

Huang Zhikun, director of the International Endoscopic Weight Loss Center of Kaohsiung E-Da Hospital, said that sleeve gastrectomy can now be performed through laparoscopy. The method is to perform sleeve resection of the greater curvature of the stomach, retaining about 100cc of stomach capacity, and achieve weight loss by reducing and restricting food intake. Its advantage is that after gastrectomy, the secretion of gastric hormones can be reduced, thereby reducing hunger. It is also safer and has a lower complication rate. The quality of diet after surgery is better than gastric bypass, and there will be no dumping syndrome. It is a very suitable weight loss surgery for Asians. The effect is between gastric bypass and gastric banding, and the safety is also between the two. It can be said to be a fairly "moderate" surgery.

【Four-stage dietary principles after sleeve gastrectomy】

The Taipei Medical University Weight Management Center recommends the following four stages of dietary precautions after sleeve gastrectomy:

Phase 1: Clear liquid diet (1-3 days after surgery)

Avoid drinking milk or soy milk within one week after surgery to prevent bloating and discomfort; avoid alcoholic beverages, carbonated drinks, and caffeinated drinks, and be careful not to drink large amounts of food. Suitable foods include: liquid foods without residue, such as water, sports drinks, clear vegetable and fruit juices, rice soup, and fish broth.

Phase 2: Full liquid diet (3-7 days after surgery)

Avoid hard and solid foods, carbonated drinks, and spicy and irritating foods. Cooked solid food can be put into a blender and blended into liquid, such as thick soup, egg drop soup, tender tofu, vegetable puree, and juice. If eaten directly, you need to chew the food in small bites until it is rotten before swallowing.

Phase 3: Semi-liquid diet (7-14 days after surgery)

Avoid foods that are low in moisture or too dry to be easily swallowed; avoid spicy, irritating, fried, or sticky foods. It is recommended to eat minced or chopped solid food and add it to drinks or soup to cook it into porridge or noodle soup, and then gradually move on to soft food, such as dumplings. It takes 6 to 8 weeks for the gastrectomy anastomosis to heal after surgery. All food choices should be light and easy to digest.

Stage 4: Solid Food (1 month after surgery)

Avoid sweets, sugary drinks, alcohol and high-fat foods. Maintain a low-fat, high-protein diet, try to choose soft, easily digestible foods, and avoid overeating.
