Beauty pageant measurement? Hubei's selection of top ten campus beauties sparks controversy

In recent years, beauty pageants held in China have frequently caused controversy, some because the judges' aesthetic standards were too "strange", or even because the general appearance of the contestants was embarrassing. Recently, the Hubei University Top 10 Campus Beauty Selection Competition held by China Model Network in Wuhan actually required the use of a ruler to examine every part of the contestants' appearance. As soon as this standard was released, it triggered criticism from all walks of life.

According to Chongqing Business Daily, the organizing committee of the beauty pageant has drawn up 50 selection criteria, stipulating that the contestant's height must be 7.1 times the length of the head, the distance between the mouth and eyes must be 36% of the length of the face, and the size, shape, and position of the breasts on both sides must be symmetrical. The requirements for breasts are even very strict, such as the distance between the two breasts must be greater than 20 centimeters, the diameter of the breast base must be 10 to 12 centimeters, and the height from the base to the nipple must be 5 to 6 centimeters.

In response to doubts from all walks of life, the organizer stated that the selection criteria were also formulated with reference to Internet standards, aiming to select the most authentic beauties, and that these 50 criteria are not yet the final conditions. Currently, any student who is over 162 cm tall and weighs under 55 kg can sign up to participate, and five specific implementation standards will be selected later as review conditions.

Using strict size specifications as aesthetic standards seems to encourage women to become "artificial beauties". If all beautiful things must follow the "standard range", it will inevitably make people feel that women are objectified. The organizers later clarified that they will not really select through actual measurements. After all, the contestants are all students, and they need to pay more attention to the contestants' feelings.
