The Department of Agriculture and Food stated that there are many rice varieties in the country. After investigation, the top five rice varieties that are most popular in the domestic consumer market are Taijing No. 9, Tainong No. 71 (Yiquan Fragrant Rice), Kaohsiung No. 139, Kaohsiung No. 145 and Taijing No. 16. The industry has listed these varieties as specialty rice varieties in each county and city and strengthened their promotion. Consumers are welcome to experience the special taste of different varieties, eat more, and add points to domestic rice.

Huang Meihua, deputy director of the Department of Agriculture and Food, pointed out that delicious white rice must not only taste fragrant and chewy, but also look white and free of impurities. In order to understand the reaction of the Taiwanese people to domestic rice varieties, the agency's research and development team conducted a survey of rice varieties preferred by the consumer market through members of various rice and grain associations. The results showed that Taijing No. 9 is the most popular among consumers because of its transparent and plump rice grains, good stickiness and delicious taste.

The second best is Tainong No. 71 (Yichuan Fragrant Rice), which has a taro flavor and a bright appearance. Kaohsiung No. 139, which is durable in storage and tastes good both hot and cold, is also well received. Kaohsiung No. 145 and Taijing No. 16 also win with their plump and uniform appearance and sweet taste. This shows that the quality of domestic rice, whether in terms of taste, flavor or appearance, can cater to the preferences of Chinese people.

In addition, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations breeds high-quality rice seeds through a three-level breeding system every year. In order to meet consumer demand and improve the efficiency of the implementation of the breeding program, the agency has stepped up the promotion of breeding of specialty rice varieties since last year to produce high-quality rice for the people to enjoy.

On the other hand, the Agricultural Experiment Station has combined mountain and plain rice varieties and, since 1999, has developed a stable new rice variety through 12 years of testing and verification. It was officially named "Tainong No. 79" on November 3 last year. It is a hybrid breeding method using the plain high-quality rice variety Tainong No. 71 (Yiquan Fragrant Rice) as the female parent and the mountain variety Ya A Bi from Ren'ai Township, Nantou County as the male parent.

Its rice yield is higher than that of Taijing No. 9, and its first crop is also more resistant to the impact of continuous plum rains and cold during the heading period than other varieties, which can reduce the planting risks brought about by climate change. During the current trial period, rice yields have performed better in test areas such as Chiayi and Changhua. In the future, priority will be given to trial planting and evaluation in the central and southern regions, which will inject new life into the sustainable development of Taiwan's rice varieties.
