Liu Zhenfang, professor of the Department of Health and Nutrition at Chang Gung University of Science and Technology, said that both green tea and black tea contain catechins and caffeine, but when comparing the effects of the two ingredients on weight loss, catechins are more effective. A research analysis found that among all types of tea drinks, green tea contains the highest proportion of catechins, followed by oolong tea, and black tea is only ranked third and the content is far less than that of green tea. This also shows that the weight loss effect of green tea may be better than that of black tea.

Professor Liu Zhenfang pointed out that catechins and tannins are both polyphenols, but tannins, which account for a very small proportion, play a role related to "taste" and are the key to affecting astringency, but have no effect on weight loss. On the other hand, catechins, which account for the highest proportion of the ingredients, have been proven in recent studies to have the effect of maintaining fat metabolism, increasing fat burning rate during exercise, and making people lose weight faster.

Caffeine can help you lose weight, but black tea has little effect on burning fat

The catechin content of black tea is far less than that of green tea, but what about caffeine? Professor Liu Zhenfang said that caffeine has the effects of promoting metabolism and diuresis. It can increase the speed and utilization of body fat metabolism in a short period of time, save sugar consumption, enhance endurance and muscle explosiveness, and prolong running endurance. It is one of the assistants for athletes to improve their athletic performance.

However, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) also has restrictions on the amount of caffeine that athletes can consume to avoid undermining the principle of fair competition. If the caffeine content in the urine exceeds 12 mg per milliliter, it is considered a violation. If you consume 700 mg of caffeine in 30 minutes, you will exceed the limit. If ordinary people consume too much, it will also cause side effects such as accelerated heartbeat, palpitations, and frequent urination.

As for the caffeine contained in black tea, Professor Liu Zhenfang said that the caffeine content of 500cc of green tea is about 39 mg, and the caffeine content in black tea is not particularly high. It is difficult to scientifically measure its effect on weight loss. Even if it helps to burn fat a little, it may require "very large" drinking to be enough. In comparison, green tea, which has a higher proportion of catechins, is more effective in burning fat.
