What does acute and chronic cervicitis mean?

Acute and chronic cervicitis generally refers to acute and chronic inflammation of the cervix.

Cervicitis is one of the common gynecological diseases, which refers to inflammation of the cervix, including cervical vaginal inflammation and cervical mucosal inflammation. Cervicitis is clinically divided into acute cervicitis and chronic cervicitis.

Acute cervicitis is cervical injury caused by sexual intercourse, abortion, childbirth, and diagnostic curettage. Pathogens invade the damaged area, and the main manifestations are cervical swelling and cervical mucosal edema. Most of them are accompanied by acute vaginitis or acute endometritis. Patients may experience symptoms such as sexual pain and lower abdominal pain.

Chronic cervicitis may be caused by acute cervicitis or by persistent infection with pathogens. It is often manifested by cervical columnar epithelial ectopia, cervical hypertrophy, cervical polyps, etc. Patients may have increased leucorrhea, pain in the lower abdomen or lumbosacral region, irregular menstruation, dysmenorrhea, pelvic heaviness, etc. It is not recommended for patients with cervicitis to wear tight synthetic underwear. They should wear loose and breathable underwear, dry them in a ventilated place, develop good hygiene habits, and clean the vulva properly every day.
