Is cervicitis cervical erosion?

Cervical erosion is an old name, and now it is clinically called cervical columnar epithelium ectopia. Cervicitis is not cervical columnar epithelium ectopia. Cervicitis is divided into acute cervicitis and chronic cervicitis. Cervical columnar epithelium ectopia is just a clinical symptom, which can be a physiological change or a pathological change, such as cervicitis, early cervical cancer, etc.

1. Acute cervicitis: It is caused by various pathogens invading the cervix, including gonococci, Chlamydia trachomatis, herpes simplex virus, mycoplasma, etc. After invading the cervix, it causes local congestion and edema of the cervix, epithelial degeneration and necrosis, and a large amount of purulent secretions in the glandular cavity. Patients will show increased vaginal secretions, which are mucopurulent, as well as intermenstrual bleeding and bleeding after sexual intercourse. Such patients can be given drug treatment under the guidance of a doctor, such as azithromycin, doxycycline, ceftriaxone sodium, etc.

2. Chronic cervicitis: It can be caused by the persistence of acute cervicitis or by persistent infection of pathogens. Most patients are asymptomatic, but a few will feel increased secretions and bleeding after sexual intercourse. Gynecological examinations will reveal ectropion and edema of the cervical mucosa, and some will show cervical polyps and cervical hypertrophy. You can follow the doctor's advice to use drugs such as azithromycin and levofloxacin for treatment, and hysteroscopic surgery if necessary.

Cervical columnar epithelium ectopia is not actually erosion in the true sense. It is the migration of the columnar epithelium of the cervical canal to the cervical vaginal part. Because the columnar epithelium is thin, the underlying stroma is red and appears to be erosive to the naked eye, but it is not erosion in the true sense.

If cervical columnar epithelial ectopia is found, relevant examinations for cervical inflammation and cervical TCT and HPV tests are required to rule out cervical intraepithelial lesions or cervical cancer. Measures should be taken according to the examination results and the doctor's advice.
