Be careful not to fall into the misunderstanding of cervical erosion

Cervical erosion is not as terrible as imagined. Women should re-understand "cervical erosion" and should not simply misinterpret "erosion" from its literal meaning. So, what are the misunderstandings about cervical erosion?

1. Is cervical erosion a “problem” only for married women?

Clinically, women who do not have sex still have cervical erosion, which is related to the high hormone level of women. Therefore, not having a history of sex does not mean that cervical erosion will not occur. For unmarried women or women who do not have sex, if they simply find changes like cervical erosion, there is no need to worry, but if there is a persistent increase in leucorrhea, or changes in color or texture, they should go to the gynecological clinic to find out the cause and treat it in time.

2. Will cervical erosion increase the risk of cervical cancer?

Theoretically, cervical erosion is caused by the replacement of the squamous epithelium of the cervix with columnar epithelium, rather than true erosion. Cervical cancer is an abnormal proliferation of the squamous epithelium of the cervix, mainly caused by high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. The two have different pathogenic factors and pathogenesis, and their pathological changes are also different. Therefore, simple cervical erosion, if not accompanied by HPV infection, will not lead to the occurrence of cervical cancer. The statement that cervical erosion can cause cancer is wrong. There is no necessary causal relationship between the two. It can only be said that early cervical cancer will show erosive manifestations, and this erosive manifestation is different from simple cervical erosion. Women do not need to worry too much.

Women with cervical erosion should be reminded that during gynecological examinations, cervical cytology should be performed to preliminarily exclude the possibility of cervical cancer. This is because it is difficult to distinguish early cervical cancer from cervical erosion based on gynecological examinations alone. If conditions permit, HPV testing should be performed at the same time as cervical cytology.
