Vulvar leukoplakia should be differentiated from other white skin diseases

The symptoms of vulvar leukoplakia are very similar to the following types of white skin lesions and should be carefully distinguished during diagnosis.

Vulvar leukoplakia: mainly refers to the lesions of the skin of women's genitals, mainly localized or diffuse white patches, which can spread to the inner side of the lower limbs, perineum and anus, but rarely invade the urethral opening and vestibule. The patient's symptoms are mainly genital itching, dry skin, and local skin hypertrophy, whitening and inelasticity. In severe cases, there may even be local atrophy and ulceration, often accompanied by pain and burning sensation.

1. Differentiation from vitiligo

The white areas on the vulva of patients with vitiligo are generally well-defined, and the skin surface is relatively smooth and moist, with a completely normal texture, and no abnormal symptoms such as itching. In addition, although vitiligo often occurs on the vulva, its characteristics are more obvious. The white spots are mostly milky white and of varying sizes. They often occur on the labia majora and labia minora, and the pubic hair will also turn white, which is very different from the above-mentioned vulvar white spots.

2. Differentiation from vulvar albinism

Vulvar albinism is a hereditary disease that mostly occurs throughout the body, but it may also cause white spots only on the vulva. Unlike vulvar leukoplakia, local white spots caused by albinism mostly have no subjective symptoms such as itching, and biopsy generally shows no special lesions except the disappearance of epidermal pigmentation.

3. Differentiation from Behcet's disease

The main symptoms of Behcet's disease are genital ulcers, which are often accompanied by lesions of the eyes and oral cavity. It is also called eye, mouth, and genital syndrome. Traditional Chinese medicine calls it fox-induced madness, and it should be carefully differentiated from vulvar leukoplakia.
