Effect of medical abortion on subsequent pregnancy

Medical abortion itself has little impact on subsequent pregnancy, but if complications occur, it will have some adverse effects on subsequent pregnancy.

Infertility

Patients who have undergone medical abortion infection treatment and have been infertile for more than 1 to 2 years without taking contraceptive measures should consider whether the medical abortion has caused inflammation, adhesions and blockage of the fallopian tubes, leading to secondary infertility. They should undergo fallopian tube insufflation or angiography in a timely manner for early diagnosis and treatment.

Increased incidence of placenta previa

Prolonged vaginal bleeding after medical abortion can lead to endometritis or uterine damage, causing incomplete growth of uterine decidua blood vessels. When the fertilized egg implants during the next pregnancy, the blood supply is insufficient. In order to absorb enough nutrients, the placenta expands and stretches to the lower part of the uterus, causing placenta previa. Placenta previa is one of the main causes of bleeding in late pregnancy.

Increased incidence of placenta accreta and placenta accreta

Endometritis after medical abortion can cause full or partial placental adhesion after another pregnancy. Due to endometritis, decidual dysplasia, and insufficient nutrient supply, the placenta implants into the fetal layer of the uterus to absorb more nutrients. Placental adhesion and placenta accreta are both causes of postpartum hemorrhage.
