There has been a lot of controversy in China over the issue of imported American beef containing the lean meat stimulant ractopamine. New Taipei City Mayor Eric Chu emphasized at a city council meeting this morning that the recent controversy over American beef imports has affected people's confidence in food safety, but that ractopamine is a central legislative issue and that the law prohibits all meat products, both domestic and foreign. Health authorities can only conduct inspections in accordance with current laws.

However, Zhu Lilun also suggested that if effective control is to be achieved, health authorities could consider strictly controlling the source of the meat, such as hypermarkets and import manufacturers, and conducting random inspections, rather than limiting inspections to just the meat products of restaurants and downstream businesses.
