Treatment of menopausal dysfunctional uterine bleeding

Aunt Zhao, 46, came to Beijing to settle down with her son’s family two years ago. Neighbors envied Aunt Zhao, saying that her son was filial and that she could enjoy her old age. However, not long after Aunt Zhao came to Beijing, she began to have profuse menstrual bleeding, which happened every month, and occasionally heavy bleeding. At first, Aunt Zhao did not want to cause trouble for her son and never mentioned it. Later, due to long-term blood loss, she suffered from severe anemia and looked very haggard. Her son discovered his mother’s symptoms and after careful questioning, he felt that the condition could not be delayed and that she had to go to the hospital for a doctor’s diagnosis. Based on Aunt Zhao’s medical history and gynecological examination, the doctor quickly diagnosed her with functional uterine bleeding.

Dysfunctional uterine bleeding is a common disease in menopausal women, and there are many ways to treat it. If it is just irregular menstruation and the amount of bleeding is not much, you can observe for 3 to 5 months, and most of the bleeding will decrease or even stop. During the bleeding period, you must avoid overwork and mental stress, eat a proper diet, get enough rest, and try to keep your body in a relaxed and comfortable state to enhance the natural regulation of endocrine and blood.

If the patient has repeated, large amounts of irregular bleeding, a curettage is often required. On the one hand, the endometrium can be removed for pathological examination to observe subtle changes in the endometrium, which is the most reliable diagnostic method to find out the cause of uterine bleeding. On the other hand, only by scraping out the entire endometrium together with the activated substances contained in the endometrium (substances that make blood difficult to coagulate) can the basal layer of the endometrium stop bleeding normally. Generally, bleeding will decrease or stop after curettage. Even if it does not stop, you will be more confident about what treatment plan to take for future bleeding, rather than blindly taking medication.

In addition, progestin preparations are now also used in the treatment of menopausal uterine bleeding, such as oral norethindrone or medroxyprogesterone.
