What are the symptoms of chronic cervicitis and how to diagnose it?

Chronic cervicitis is the most common gynecological disease. It may occur after acute cervicitis or due to cervical laceration caused by various reasons, resulting in cervical deformation. It is often very susceptible to infection by external bacteria. However, many friends still don’t know how to diagnose chronic cervicitis. Let our experts briefly introduce the symptoms of chronic cervicitis to you! I hope it will be helpful to you!

What are the symptoms of chronic cervicitis? Experts briefly introduce to you:

Clinical manifestations

(i) Increased vaginal discharge: Sometimes it is the only symptom of chronic cervicitis. It is usually thick mucus or purulent mucus. Sometimes the discharge may contain blood or a small amount of blood, and there may also be contact bleeding. The irritation of vaginal discharge may cause vulvar itching.

(ii) Pain: Pain often occurs in the lower abdomen or lumbosacral region, and sometimes in the upper abdomen, thighs and hip joints. It worsens during menstruation, defecation or sexual intercourse, especially when the inflammation spreads backward along the uterosacral ligament or along the bottom of the broad ligament, forming chronic parauterine connective tissue inflammation. The pain is even worse when the main ligament of the cervix thickens. Whenever the cervix is touched, it immediately causes pain in the iliac fossa and lumbosacral region. Some patients may even feel nausea, which affects their sexual life.

(III) Bladder and intestinal symptoms: Chronic cervicitis can spread through the lymphatic system or directly spread to the bladder trigone or the connective tissue around the bladder. As a result, as soon as there is urine in the bladder, there is an urge to defecate, and symptoms of frequent urination or dysuria appear, but the urine is clear and the urine routine test is normal. In some cases, the inflammation continues to spread or passes through the lymphatic pathways connecting the cervix, the bladder trigone, and the ureter, causing secondary urinary tract infection. The incidence of chronic pyelonephritis in adult women is many times that of men, which may be related to this situation.

Intestinal symptoms are less common than bladder symptoms, and some patients experience pain during bowel movements.

(IV) Other symptoms: such as irregular menstruation, dysmenorrhea, pelvic heaviness, infertility, etc.

Because the symptoms of chronic cervicitis are often masked by other gynecological diseases, it is often discovered during routine gynecological examinations. The diagnosis can be made by visual inspection with a speculum, which shows bright red fine-grained erosion areas on the cervix and purulent mucoid leucorrhea secreted by the cervical canal. Clinically, chronic cervicitis can be divided into cervical erosion, cervical hypertrophy, cervical polyps, cervical glandular cysts and cervicitis, among which cervical erosion is the most common. According to the size of the cervical erosion surface, it can be divided into three types: mild, moderate and severe:

Mild: The erosion area accounts for 1/3 of the cervical area;

Moderate: The erosion area occupies 1/3 to 2/3 of the cervical area;

Severe: The erosion area occupies more than 2/3 of the cervical area.
