Abnormal leucorrhea in middle-aged and elderly women

Abnormal leucorrhea in middle-aged and elderly women

Abnormal leucorrhea in middle-aged and elderly women may be related to factors such as changes in hormone levels, infection, and chronic diseases. Targeted treatment is required based on the specific cause, such as drug therapy, adjustment of lifestyle habits, etc.

1. Changes in hormone levels

After middle-aged and elderly women enter menopause, their estrogen levels drop significantly, which may cause the vaginal mucosa to become thinner and secretions to decrease, leading to abnormal vaginal discharge. This condition usually manifests as a decrease in the amount of vaginal discharge, dryness, or a slight odor. It is recommended to supplement estrogen through hormone replacement therapy (HRT) or use local estrogen ointment to improve symptoms. At the same time, keep the private parts clean and avoid using irritating washes.

2. Infection

Bacterial vaginitis, candidal vaginitis or trichomonas vaginitis are common causes of abnormal leucorrhea in middle-aged and elderly women. Infection may cause increased leucorrhea, abnormal color (such as yellow or green), odor or itching. For treatment, metronidazole or clindamycin can be used for bacterial vaginitis; fluconazole or clotrimazole can be used for candidal vaginitis; and metronidazole or tinidazole should be taken orally for trichomonas vaginitis. Avoid sexual intercourse during treatment and pay attention to personal hygiene.

3. Chronic diseases

Chronic diseases such as diabetes and immune system diseases may affect the vaginal environment and cause abnormal vaginal discharge. When diabetic patients have poor blood sugar control, the vaginal sugar content increases, which is prone to mold growth. It is recommended to monitor blood sugar regularly and use hypoglycemic drugs as prescribed by the doctor. Patients with immune system diseases need to adjust their treatment plan under the guidance of a doctor to enhance their immunity.

4. Adjust your lifestyle

In terms of diet, eating more foods rich in vitamin E and Omega-3 fatty acids, such as nuts and deep-sea fish, can help improve vaginal health. In terms of exercise, do yoga or pelvic floor muscle exercises to enhance local blood circulation. Avoid sitting for long periods of time and wear breathable cotton underwear to reduce the moisture in the private area.

Middle-aged and elderly women with abnormal vaginal discharge need to take targeted treatment according to the specific cause, and adjust their lifestyle to keep their private parts clean and healthy. If symptoms persist or worsen, they should seek medical attention in time to rule out the possibility of serious diseases.
