What to do if the vaginal discharge is abnormal

Abnormal vaginal discharge may be caused by IUD irritation, infection or hormonal changes, and appropriate measures should be taken according to the specific cause.

Abnormal vaginal discharge after intrauterine contraceptive device (IUD) insertion is a common phenomenon and may be related to a variety of factors. The intrauterine contraceptive device is placed in the uterus as a foreign body, which may irritate the endometrium, causing increased secretions or changes in the color and texture of vaginal discharge. If the vaginal discharge is yellow, green, or accompanied by an odor, it may be a manifestation of bacterial infection or vaginitis. The IUD may affect the secretion of cervical mucus, resulting in an increase in the amount of vaginal discharge or a change in texture. Changes in hormone levels may also affect vaginal discharge, especially hormone-containing IUDs, which may cause endocrine fluctuations.

For abnormal leucorrhea after IUD insertion, different measures need to be taken according to the specific cause. If the leucorrhea increases slightly and there is no odor or discomfort, usually no special treatment is required, just pay attention to personal hygiene. Wash the vulva with warm water every day, avoid using irritating lotions, choose cotton underwear and change them frequently. If the abnormal leucorrhea is accompanied by itching, odor or pain, it may be caused by infection and you need to see a doctor in time. The doctor may perform a routine examination of leucorrhea and prescribe appropriate medications after determining the type of infection. For example, metronidazole or clindamycin can be used for bacterial vaginitis, and fluconazole or clotrimazole can be used for fungal vaginitis.

For abnormal vaginal discharge caused by IUD stimulation, if the symptoms persist and affect the quality of life, you may consider changing the type of IUD or choosing another contraceptive method. Copper IUDs may be more irritating, so you may try replacing them with hormone-containing IUDs, such as the levonorgestrel intrauterine system, which releases hormones that can reduce endometrial stimulation. If abnormal vaginal discharge is accompanied by severe abdominal pain, fever, or abnormal bleeding, it may be that the IUD has shifted or the infection has worsened. You need to see a doctor immediately, remove the IUD if necessary, and receive anti-infection treatment.

To prevent abnormal vaginal discharge after IUD insertion, you need to pay attention to postoperative care and daily health care. Avoid sexual intercourse and bathing in a tub within two weeks after IUD insertion to prevent infection. Check regularly to ensure that the IUD is in the normal position. Eat more foods rich in vitamin C and probiotics, such as citrus fruits and yogurt, to enhance immunity and maintain the balance of vaginal flora. Avoid excessive fatigue and mental stress, and maintain a regular work and rest schedule to help reduce endocrine disorders. If abnormal vaginal discharge persists or worsens, you should seek medical attention in time to avoid delaying treatment.
