Itching, abnormal vaginal discharge, and odor

Itching, abnormal vaginal discharge, and odor

Itching, abnormal vaginal discharge and odor may be common symptoms of gynecological diseases such as vaginitis, cervicitis or sexually transmitted infections. You need to seek medical attention in time for a clear diagnosis and targeted treatment.

Itching, abnormal vaginal discharge, and a foul odor are often related to infection or inflammation of the vagina or cervix. Vaginitis is the most common cause and includes bacterial vaginitis, candidal vaginitis, and trichomoniasis. Bacterial vaginitis usually presents as grayish-white discharge with a fishy odor; candidal vaginitis presents as white curd-like discharge with severe itching; and trichomoniasis may cause yellow-green foamy discharge with a foul odor and itching. Cervicitis may also cause similar symptoms, especially when caused by chlamydia or gonococcal infection. Sexually transmitted infections such as gonorrhea, chlamydia, or trichomoniasis may also cause these symptoms.

Treatments vary for different causes. Bacterial vaginitis is often treated with oral or topical metronidazole or clindamycin; candidal vaginitis can be treated with oral fluconazole or clotrimazole vaginal suppositories; and trichomoniasis requires treatment with metronidazole or tinidazole. The treatment of cervicitis requires the selection of antibiotics based on the pathogen, such as azithromycin or doxycycline. Sexually transmitted infections require targeted medication, such as ceftriaxone for gonorrhea and azithromycin for chlamydia. In daily care, keep the vulva clean and dry, avoid using irritating washes, choose cotton underwear and change it frequently. In the diet, you can add foods rich in probiotics, such as yogurt, to help maintain the balance of vaginal flora. If symptoms persist or worsen, you should seek medical attention in time to avoid delaying the disease.
