Diet control plus exercise is the golden combination for weight loss

In July 2016, the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition published a weight loss experiment (link). The study divided overweight people who wanted to lose weight into the following three groups. The common goal was to consume 20% more or reduce calorie intake per day, and it was expected to lose 6 to 8% of body weight within 12 to 14 weeks.

1. Dietary control: Following dietary advice, reduce food intake and replace high-calorie density foods, but maintain normal physiological activities.

2. Exercise training: Increase the amount of exercise every day to metabolize calories.

3. Diet plus exercise training: Combine diet and exercise training, but keep the calorie deficit at 20%

The research results show that no matter which method you use, you can eventually lose weight successfully! However, in the long journey of weight loss, people often want to give up because the results are not as good as expected or there are too many restrictions. Therefore, in the group that only relies on exercise training or diet control, only 70% of them complete the weight loss plan (30% of them drop out midway). But when moderate diet control and exercise training are used, as high as 95% of them complete the weight loss plan. In addition, the cardiopulmonary function of the group that exercises increases significantly, but there is no difference in the group that relies on diet control alone.

So if you want to lose weight, this is the first reason you should exercise!
