The pigs are overcrowded! Taiwan Sugar: Pork prices have dropped sharply, so you can eat pork with peace of mind

Taiwan Sugar Corporation said that due to the news about clenbuterol, the domestic supply of pork far exceeded demand, causing pork prices to plummet after the Lunar New Year. In order to comply with government policy, Taiwan Sugar has been slowly releasing pigs since mid-January. There was even a week when no sugar pigs were put on the market, causing the farms to be "overcrowded with pigs". Consumers are urged to recognize the CAS mark of compliance or Taiwan Sugar's traceable production history, eat pork with peace of mind, and save Taiwan's pig farmers.

In response to government policy, Taiwan Sugar Corporation began to slowly sell pigs in mid-January this year, resulting in more than 17,700 pigs that should have been sold but have not been sold, and the livestock farms are simply overcrowded. (Photo provided by Taisugar)

Taiwan Sugar Corporation analyzed that the recent sharp drop in pork prices is due to the decrease in demand after the Lunar New Year, but the supply is very sufficient. Coupled with the impact of the clenbuterol storm, consumers' willingness to buy has decreased, causing pork prices to hit a record low of over 50 yuan per kilogram, a drop of nearly 30% from two months ago.

Due to the dismal pork prices, Taiwan Sugar also cooperated with the Council of Agriculture's policy to slow down pig sales. There was even a period of a whole week when no sugar pigs were put on the market. However, there are currently more than 17,000 unsalted pigs in Taisugar's farms, which is simply overcrowded. The cost of feed plus other costs is estimated to result in a loss of nearly 40 million yuan. Currently, Taiwan Sugar has increased the monthly slaughter of frozen pork from 6,000 to 9,000 heads. At the same time, it has also accelerated the elimination of breeding sows and reduced the number of sows for breeding by 5% to reduce expenses and maintain the quality of pig houses.

Taiwan Sugar Corporation said that due to the news about ractopamine, people are afraid to buy pork products, causing prices to continue to fall. Therefore, Taiwan Sugar calls on consumers to eat products with confidence as long as they recognize the CAS certification mark or production history on the products, and to eat more pork products to save Taiwan's pig farmers.
