These 3 tests can be used to determine whether you have bacterial vaginosis

There are many methods for checking bacterial vaginosis. Bacterial vaginosis has long been a threat to women's health, and the premise for effective treatment of bacterial vaginosis is to quickly and accurately diagnose the pathogen. Commonly used clinical diagnostic criteria for bacterial vaginosis include the Amsel standard, the Nugent Gram staining scoring standard, and the detection of specific products.

If bacterial vaginosis is detected, it is recommended to treat it as soon as possible. After recovery, you can start to get pregnant. Because if you encounter gynecological inflammation during pregnancy, the inflammation may invade the uterus and affect the health of the fetus, and it may cause adhesion of the fallopian tube due to inflammation and infection, increasing the probability of ectopic pregnancy. So, what tests can be used to determine bacterial vaginosis?
1. Amsel Criteria
The Amsel criteria are clinical diagnostic criteria for bacterial vaginosis proposed by Amsel et al. in 1983. According to the Amsel criteria, bacterial vaginosis can be diagnosed if three of the following four conditions are met:
a. Vaginal secretions are uniform and thin
b. The pH value of vaginal secretions is greater than 4.5
c. Amine test is positive: 10% KOH is dripped into vaginal secretions, and an amine odor is produced, which is positive.
d. Clue cells found in vaginal secretion wet smear
2. Nugent Scoring
Nugent score is a scoring system for diagnosing bacterial vaginosis proposed by Nugent et al. in 1991. According to the Nugent scoring system, vaginal secretions are smeared and Gram-stained, and the number of each type of bacteria in each field of view is observed under an oil immersion lens and scored. The scores of each type of bacteria are added together, and the total score is the final score of the sample. A total score of 0 to 3 points indicates normal vaginal flora, 4 to 6 is intermediate, and 7 to 10 is confirmed as BV.
3. Detection of specific products
Diagnostic principle:
① Sialidase: Among the anaerobic bacteria that cause this disease, Prevotella and Bacteroides produce sialidase. Therefore, the proliferation of anaerobic bacteria in the vagina can be reflected by detecting sialidase, thereby making a diagnosis of this disease. Existing studies have shown that sialidase has a high sensitivity and accuracy in diagnosing BV.
② Proline aminopeptidase: Among the anaerobic bacteria that cause this disease, Gardnerella vaginalis and Mobiluncus are the main bacteria that produce proline aminopeptidase, so BV can be diagnosed by detecting proline aminopeptidase.
③ Hydrogen peroxide: Lactobacillus that produces H2O2 is the main flora in the vagina of healthy women, so the status of Lactobacillus in the vagina can be reflected by the detection of H2O2.
The clinical cure standard for BV is that the patient's vaginal discharge test can meet less than 2 of the 4 items of the Amsel diagnostic criteria. The recurrence rate of BV after treatment is high, and timely follow-up cannot be ignored. Patients with persistent vaginal discomfort symptoms should be followed up regularly and closely.
The above three examination methods can all be used to determine whether you have bacterial vaginosis. Each detection method needs to be selected based on the medical level of the patient and the hospital.
