Long-term use of birth control pills can cause amenorrhea

Birth control pills are designed to achieve the purpose of contraception by changing women's menstrual cycles, but long-term use of birth control pills can cause amenorrhea in women.

Long-term use of birth control pills will cause the endometrium to shrink, and once the drug is stopped, amenorrhea will occur. Taking birth control pills or intramuscular injections for a period of time, stopping the drug for more than 3 months, and menstruation cannot come on its own, and pregnancy is ruled out, is called post-medication amenorrhea.

Contraceptive pills can change the uterine environment, reduce endometrial secretion, and make the endometrium grow thinner, so that a complete menstruation cannot be formed. If it is a long-acting drug, it can inhibit the growth of the endometrium and cause scanty menstruation or even amenorrhea. However, this phenomenon is generally temporary, and most women can automatically resume menstruation after stopping the drug. Therefore, non-pregnant women with scanty, infrequent menstruation, and rare ovulation should not use oral or intramuscular contraceptives for contraception, but should take other methods of contraception.

Contraceptives also have an inhibitory effect on the function of the endometrium. Long-term use will seriously inhibit the function of the endometrium, preventing it from growing to normal thickness and from shedding regularly and periodically, leading to incomplete development of the endometrial glands, which can easily cause amenorrhea. In fact, contraceptives inhibit the ovaries and endometrium at the same time, so young women should try to avoid taking them for a long time. If taken for a long time, it is easy to cause a decline in the function of the ovaries themselves, leading to endocrine dysfunction and hormonal imbalance, which can cause amenorrhea.
