Preventive measures for senile vaginitis

Preventive measures for senile vaginitis

About 30% of women will develop senile vaginitis after menopause. The reason is that the level of sex hormones in the body decreases significantly after menopause, causing the pH value in the vagina to rise, which weakens the resistance of the vaginal mucosa to pathogens and makes it easier for bacteria to cause infection. Elderly women should take special precautions against vaginal infections in their daily lives.

Proper cleaning of the vulva

Do not use hot water to wash the vulva because of vulvar itching. Although this can temporarily relieve vulvar itching, it will make the vulvar skin dry and rough, and the itching will become more obvious soon. When washing the vulva, it is advisable to use warm water and add a little salt or vinegar.

Do not use soap or various liquid medicines to clean the vulva. Because the vulva skin of elderly women is generally dry and atrophied, frequent use of soap and other irritating cleaning products to clean the vulva will aggravate the dryness of the skin, cause itching, and damage the vulva skin.

Maintaining vaginal hygiene

Change your underwear every day. The underwear should be loose and comfortable, and made of pure cotton fabric. Do not share your own washing basins and towels with others.

Do not abuse drugs

Do not abuse medication when the vulva is uncomfortable. Because the bacteria that cause senile vaginitis are mostly Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus and other bacteria, unlike women of childbearing age, which are most common in fungal vaginitis and Trichomonas vaginitis, do not abuse drugs for fungal or Trichomonas treatment, and do not abuse hormone ointments for vulvar vaginitis as vulvar eczema, which will be counterproductive.

Reduce sexual friction

Because the vaginal mucosa of elderly women is thin and the elastic tissue in the vagina is reduced, sexual intercourse may damage the vaginal mucosa and blood vessels in the mucosa, allowing bacteria to take the opportunity to invade. You can apply a small amount of oil to the vaginal opening before sexual intercourse to lubricate the vagina and reduce friction.
