The surgical process of curettage for abortion

The surgical process of curettage for abortion

Curettage is a type of artificial abortion procedure, mainly suitable for those who want to terminate the pregnancy at 10 to 14 weeks of pregnancy without contraindications, or those who are not suitable to continue the pregnancy due to certain diseases, or those who have failed other abortion methods.

1. Preoperative cervical preparation

First, use a rubber catheter to dilate the cervix. Slowly insert a catheter of appropriate size into the cervix 12 hours before surgery and remove it during surgery. Take prostaglandin preparations orally, intramuscularly, or vaginally 3 hours before surgery to dilate and soften the cervix.

2. Surgical Procedure

During the operation, routine disinfection, draping, and removal of the catheter are performed. For those who are nervous, fearful, or overly sensitive to pain, cervical mucosal anesthetics, paracervical block anesthesia, or intravenous anesthesia should be applied before dilating the cervix. During intravenous anesthesia, the anesthesiologist should monitor to avoid accidents. Then use a cervical dilator to fully dilate the cervix, first break the fetal membrane, and then use uterine contraction drugs as appropriate after the amniotic fluid has flowed out. After clamping the placenta and fetal tissue with an oval forceps, use a suitable straw to put it into the uterine cavity for suction. Finally, use a curette to perform uterine cleaning and measure the depth of the uterine cavity again to determine whether it is consistent with the depth measured before the operation. At the same time, observe whether the fetus is intact, whether the patient has bleeding or injuries, etc. If the uterine contraction is poor, oxytocin can be appropriately used.

It should be noted that the fetus is already large when curettage is performed and the surgical operation is more complicated, so the patient must be hospitalized for the operation so that the patient's basic condition can be closely observed.
