3 things to pay attention to in daily life of elderly patients with vaginitis

Senile vaginitis generally refers to vaginitis that occurs in women after menopause. After menopause, due to factors such as a sharp drop in estrogen levels, atrophy of the vaginal mucosa, bulging of the vaginal wall, and increased vaginal pH, the local resistance of the vagina is weakened, making vaginitis more likely to occur. Therefore, elderly women must pay attention to the following three points in their daily lives:

1. Pay attention to daily hygiene

Elderly women should pay attention to daily local hygiene to reduce the chance of getting sick. Try not to use soap or various lotions to clean the vulva and vagina, because the vulva skin of elderly women has different degrees of atrophy and is relatively dry. Frequent use of irritating detergents will aggravate the dryness of the skin, cause itching, and even damage the vulva skin. In addition, pay attention to changing underwear frequently, choose loose, cotton underwear, ensure that the basin and towel used for washing are dedicated, and choose toilet paper with the words "Xiaozhun" ("Xiaozhun") on it.

2. Avoid using hot water to wash the vulva

Some elderly patients with vaginitis have the habit of washing the vulva with hot water, because this can temporarily relieve the itching symptoms. However, they do not know that this behavior not only cannot cure the disease, but will aggravate the condition, because hot water will make the vulva skin dry and rough, and the itching will soon become more obvious.

3. Avoid using drugs indiscriminately when there is discomfort in the vulva

Generally, the most common vaginitis in women of childbearing age are candidal vaginitis and Trichomonas vaginitis, while the pathogens of senile vaginitis are mainly Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus and other bacteria, so there are great differences in the treatment medications. Therefore, elderly women should avoid taking medication on their own when discomfort occurs in the vulva, and should not mistake vulvovaginitis for vulvar eczema and use hormone ointments indiscriminately. They should go to the hospital for regular treatment to avoid worsening or recurrence of the disease.
