What are the causes of dysmenorrhea from the perspective of traditional Chinese medicine?

We usually go to the doctor through Western medicine. From the perspective of Western medicine, dysmenorrhea is divided into: 1. Primary dysmenorrhea, which refers to those with no obvious organic lesions in the reproductive organs. 2. Secondary dysmenorrhea, which is caused by lesions in the reproductive organs, such as pelvic endometriosis, adenomyoma, chronic pelvic inflammatory disease, etc. So what are the causes of dysmenorrhea from the perspective of traditional Chinese medicine?

From the perspective of traditional Chinese medicine, the cause of dysmenorrhea is related to the periodic physiological changes of Chong and Ren meridians and the uterus. The syndrome differentiation and treatment are as follows:

1. Evidence: Pain occurs when Qi and blood are blocked, which is the cause of dysmenorrhea, meaning that it is caused by poor circulation of Qi and blood.

Due to liver qi stagnation, blood stasis, menstrual blood stagnation in the uterus, or due to cold evil, excessive consumption of cold and raw food, which makes the blood cold, or due to damp heat evil, damp heat and blood stagnate, causing qi and blood to stagnate. Before or during menstruation, qi and blood flow to Chongren, uterus, and uterine vessels, causing stagnation and obstruction, so pain occurs.

The treatment method should be to remove blood stasis and relieve pain. 3 to 5 days before menstruation, those with qi stagnation should promote qi and blood circulation to relieve pain, those with cold stagnation should warm the meridians and dispel cold to relieve pain, and those with damp heat should clear away heat and dampness to relieve pain.

2. Deficiency syndrome: pain occurs when qi and blood are not nourished, which means it is caused by deficiency of qi and blood or deficiency of liver and kidney.

Due to insufficient Qi and blood or poor spleen and stomach function, Qi and blood are weak and stagnant, or the liver and kidney function is damaged, resulting in deficiency of essence and blood, which makes the Chong and Ren meridians closely related to women's physiology lose nourishment, resulting in dysmenorrhea. The treatment method should be daily adjustment and nourishment, replenishing Qi and blood or nourishing the liver and kidneys.
