How to treat secondary amenorrhea with traditional Chinese medicine

The TCM treatment of secondary amenorrhea focuses on regulating qi and blood, soothing the liver and regulating qi, and tonifying the kidney and spleen. Commonly used methods include Chinese medicine conditioning, acupuncture, massage, etc. Secondary amenorrhea is often related to factors such as liver depression and qi stagnation, kidney deficiency, and insufficient qi and blood. TCM adopts corresponding treatment measures for different causes through syndrome differentiation and treatment.

1. Chinese medicine conditioning

TCM believes that secondary amenorrhea is closely related to dysfunction of the liver, kidney and spleen. For those with liver depression and qi stagnation, Chaihu Shugan Powder, Xiaoyao Powder and other medicines are often used to relieve liver depression; for those with kidney deficiency, Liuwei Dihuang Pills, Jinkui Shenqi Pills and other medicines can be used to nourish the kidney and replenish essence; for those with insufficient qi and blood, Bazhen Decoction, Guipi Decoction and other medicines can be used to nourish qi and blood. The specific medication should be prescribed by a TCM physician based on individual constitution and symptoms.

2. Acupuncture

Acupuncture regulates the circulation of Qi and blood and improves endocrine function by stimulating specific acupoints. Commonly used acupoints include Guanyuan, Sanyinjiao, Zusanli, Taichong, etc. Guanyuan acupoint can replenish kidney Qi, Sanyinjiao can regulate the liver, spleen and kidney, Zusanli can enhance the circulation of Qi and blood, and Taichong acupoint can soothe the liver and regulate Qi. Acupuncture treatment must be performed by a professional Chinese medicine practitioner, and the course of treatment is generally 10-15 times, 2-3 times a week.

3. Massage

Massage stimulates the meridians through manipulation and promotes the circulation of qi and blood. Common manipulations include abdominal massage, acupressure, and massage. Abdominal massage can regulate the spleen and stomach, acupressure on Sanyinjiao, Guanyuan and other acupoints can replenish the kidney and qi, and massage of the bladder meridian on the back can dredge the meridians. Massage treatment needs to be performed by professional technicians, 2-3 times a week, and continuous treatment for 1-2 months.

4. Diet adjustment

The diet should focus on replenishing qi and blood, and benefiting the liver and kidneys. Recommended foods include red dates, longan, black sesame, walnut, yam, wolfberry, etc. Red dates and longan tea can replenish qi and blood, black sesame and walnut porridge can replenish the kidney and improve essence, and yam and wolfberry soup can strengthen the spleen and kidney. Avoid raw, cold, spicy, and greasy foods, and keep a light and balanced diet.

5. Lifestyle Adjustment

Maintain a regular work and rest schedule, avoid staying up late, and do appropriate exercise such as yoga and Tai Chi to help regulate your body and mind. Emotional management is also important, avoid excessive tension and anxiety, and keep a good mood. Quit smoking and limit alcohol consumption to reduce the interference of bad living habits on the endocrine system.

TCM treatment of secondary amenorrhea emphasizes overall conditioning, and a personalized plan should be formulated according to individual conditions. Patients should receive treatment under the guidance of professional TCM physicians, while adopting a healthy lifestyle to gradually restore the menstrual cycle and improve overall health.
