If you eat the wrong tonic food in winter, be careful of exceeding the BMI limit! Data from the Taiwan Human Biological Database shows that one out of every two Taiwanese people has an overweight BMI, and an overweight BMI is an important risk factor for metabolic syndrome, and even many diseases are closely related to obesity. However, there are some people who love to eat digestive foods and don't like to exercise, yet they never gain weight no matter how much they eat. It turns out that there really is a "slim gene".

In order to crack the BMI code, the team of sub-project 3, led by Professor Zhiyang Shen of the Academia Sinica, analyzed statistical data from the Taiwan Human Biobank. From 10,000 people who had their blood drawn for genetic analysis and filled out questionnaires about their lifestyle habits, they found that among people who did not control their weight and had the habit of eating late-night snacks, those with a DOK5 gene locus mutation had a 41% lower risk of high BMI.

You can eat without gaining weight. There really is a "slim gene"

Some people take digestive fluids regularly and don't like to exercise, yet they never gain weight. It turns out that there really is a "slim gene". People with such talents are truly enviable. However, people who are not born with the mutation do not need to be too disappointed. Further analysis of people who do not carry the mutation site in the DOK5 gene found that BMI can be lowered by controlling these risk factors, such as maintaining an exercise habit of 30 minutes three times a week and reducing the frequency of eating out and late-night snacks. Comprehensive evaluation shows that maintaining exercise habits and reducing the frequency of eating out and late-night snacks can still reduce the risk of high BMI by 15%.

TABATA Interval Exercise to Beat BMI

The research team suggests that exercise habits can be developed through TABATA interval exercises, which have limited space restrictions and can be performed with bare hands. Professor Shen Zhiyang said that TABATA training is a form of high-intensity interval training. The formula is: "Exercise for 20 seconds, rest for 10 seconds, and do 8 cycles like this, for a total of 4 minutes." It combines aerobic and strength training for the whole body. You only need to exert the maximum strength of your whole body within 4 minutes to achieve the effect of 1 hour of exercise.

Taking beginners as an example, there are 4 main movements, each of which is repeated twice for 8 cycles. The TABATA beginner movements include supported abdominal jumps, jumping jacks, touching knees with hands together, running with high legs in place, etc. It includes two aerobic exercises and muscle strength training, which can quickly burn fat, exercise muscle endurance and improve cardiopulmonary function.

Do not consume excessive amounts of tonic soup to avoid blood pressure fluctuations

In addition, as the temperature drops in winter, everyone likes to indulge in mutton hotpot and ginger duck as tonic. However, the elders in the family will remind people with high blood pressure not to try to take tonic as they are worried that the more they take the tonic, the higher their blood pressure will be. According to research, drinking mutton hotpot and ginger duck tonic soup containing Chinese medicinal materials that dilate coronary arteries and increase blood flow, such as angelica and astragalus, can actually lower blood pressure; however, you should still pay attention to blood pressure fluctuations for a period of time after consumption, so you should be careful not to consume too much of the tonic soup.

This study was led by Professor Yang Junyu, Vice President of Kaohsiung Medical University. The subjects' blood pressure rose to the highest point within 1 minute after drinking the tonic soup, and then began to drop. On the contrary, because the tonic soup contains Chinese angelica, astragalus and other medicinal herbs, it has the combined effects of dilating coronary arteries, increasing blood flow, dilating peripheral blood vessels, and lowering arterial blood pressure, so blood pressure may be lowered after drinking it. The subjects in each group were measured 70 minutes after drinking 500c.c. of the tonic soup, and the average blood pressure dropped by 6%.

However, this does not mean that people with high blood pressure can safely consume tonic soup, because research has found that ginger duck cooked with rice wine before consumption caused the highest change in blood pressure. The highest systolic blood pressure after consumption showed a 16.6% fluctuation compared to 70 minutes later. Therefore, patients with a history of high blood pressure should pay attention to the amount of tonic soup they consume.

Take a rest after drinking ginger duck tonic soup to avoid falling

After drinking ginger duck tonic soup which contains alcohol, it is recommended to rest for a while to avoid the risk of falling. After actual testing, it was found that after drinking 500c.c. of ginger duck tonic soup, it takes 40 minutes of rest before exhaling for the alcohol concentration to drop below the drunk driving standard value of 0.15 in traffic regulations. This shows that consumers will be affected by the alcohol concentration.

Formosa Plastics Corporation, Wang-Chan-Yang Charitable Trust and the Taiwan Society of Epidemiology are jointly promoting the "Study on Preventable Factors of Major Causes of Death and Health Promotion in Taiwan". The project leader and Professor Chiu Hung-yi of Taipei Medical University reminds the public that the occurrence of chronic diseases is closely related to personal diet and lifestyle in addition to genetic factors, and that personal unhealthy lifestyle behaviors are the main cause of chronic diseases. Only by maintaining a balanced diet, regular exercise, and a normal lifestyle can we promote health and stay away from the risk of disease!
