Delay aging! Join the ranks of high-intensity interval training

Many studies in the past have shown that regular and quantitative exercise can enhance the immune system and cognitive ability, improve sleep, prolong life, and may also prevent aging, but the actual mechanism is still not very clear. "Cell Metabolism" recently published the latest publication from the Mayo Clinic in the United States. The research team discovered that the secret of exercise helping to prevent aging may be related to mitochondria.

In the study, the authors recruited 72 subjects, half of whom were male and half were female. They were first divided into a "young group" aged 18 to 30 and an "old group" aged 65 to 80. The subjects were then assigned to three different sports: high-intensity interval biking training, strength training using weights, and high-intensity interval biking combined with strength training using weights. The authors then examined thigh muscle biopsies from the subjects and compared them with those from a control group of voluntary sedentary subjects.

The results of the experiment found that according to the results of proteomic and RNA-sequencing analysis, exercise can encourage cells to produce more RNA copies of genes related to mitochondrial and muscle growth. The authors say that among the subjects who used high-intensity interval training, the younger group increased mitochondrial capacity by an average of about 49%, while the older group increased it by an average of about 69%.

The authors said that based on the experimental results, it can be found that high-intensity interval training has the potential to reverse aging-related mitochondrial function deterioration.

The study was published in Cell Metabolism, Vol. 25, No. 3, pp. 581-592
