9 dietary suggestions for gout to prevent diseases of affluence

Whether in the ward, outpatient clinic or friends around me, I always hear "people with high uric acid can't eat cereals" and "people with gout can't drink soy milk". I always have a question in my mind and want to ask these people, "people with gout can't eat seafood, beans, cereals... then what else can you eat?" Can you continue to eat hot pot and continue to drink alcohol for social events? So how should rich people eat?

Dietary recommendations for hyperuricemia and gout

1. Maintain a standard weight and waist circumference: If you are overweight, you should lose weight slowly. Do not lose weight quickly or fast, so as to avoid gout attacks caused by the production of uric acid due to massive cell breakdown. It is advisable to lose no more than one kilogram per month. In addition, waist circumference should be checked regularly and maintained within the standard range (National Health Administration standard: ≤90 cm for men and ≤80 cm for women).

2. Increase physical activity appropriately: According to the analysis of a large domestic health database, physical activity is significantly correlated with a reduction in mortality in patients with hyperuricemia; therefore, patients should be advised to engage in moderate and effective exercise.

3. Maintain proper water supplementation: Insufficient water intake may induce gout attacks, and blood uric acid levels can often return to normal within 3-4 days after proper and appropriate water supplementation. Proper and adequate water intake is a very important measure in treating gout attacks, acute gout attacks caused by chemotherapy for malignant tumors, and reducing the formation of uric acid stones.

4. Carbohydrates: All grains and root vegetables are edible.

5. Vegetables and fruits: Except for dried mushrooms and seaweed, which should not be consumed in large quantities, vegetables such as bean sprouts and pea shoots can be eaten, and there are no taboos on fruits.

6. Protein: It is advisable to reduce the intake of foods containing high purine, such as offal and seafood (except sea cucumbers and jellyfish skin).

7. Dairy products: Literature indicates that consuming more than two glasses of milk per day can reduce the incidence of gout by 50%. Another four-week clinical trial found that a completely dairy-free diet increased blood uric acid levels.

8. Fats and oils: Since high-fat foods inhibit the excretion of uric acid, they should be avoided in large quantities during an acute gout attack.

9. Alcohol and fructose-containing beverages: Alcohol and fructose-containing beverages will be metabolized into lactic acid in the body, affecting the excretion of uric acid, and will accelerate the formation of uric acid. Therefore, patients should avoid alcohol and fructose-containing beverages (carbonated drinks, orange juice, etc.), especially beer, which is most likely to cause gout attacks. There is no limit on coffee and tea.

Recommendations for gout patients:

You should maintain a normal body weight and drink adequate water every day, and eat more fruits and vegetables, soy products and dairy products. Avoid drinking alcohol and fructose-containing beverages, as well as foods high in purines such as offal, red meat, fish and seafood.
