Wang Wei, director of the Weight Management Center at Taipei Medical University Hospital, said that with the westernization and fast-food trend, the distribution of diseases in Taiwan has gradually become similar to that in Europe and the United States. Among them, the population of morbid obesity (BMI>40) and severe obesity (BMI>35) is also gradually increasing, just like in the United States.

In fact, according to data analysis by the National Health Administration, Taiwan has the highest number of obese people in Asia, which is quite shocking! It is also worth noting that obesity-derived diseases, such as metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease, chronic kidney disease, etc., are health warnings that cannot be ignored.

Director Wang Wei emphasized that weight control must rely on a combination of diet, exercise, and lifestyle habits, not just a simple abstention! To this end, the team of the Weight Management Center of the National Taiwan Health College of Medicine has specially chosen to cooperate with the Taiwan Friends of Weight Loss Association to hold regular events every year to help patients maintain their weight loss results in the long term.

By chance, Director Wang Wei discovered that some of his fellow surgeons were chefs and some even ran restaurants. Therefore, we decided to combine the weight management center with the expertise of our fellow surgeons in the catering industry to launch the "Fellow surgeons serve food" series of activities. Professional nutritionists and medical staff will take fellow surgeons to restaurants to provide them with practical guidance on how to eat smartly to effectively maintain their weight. This will also allow fellow surgeons to exchange experiences and encourage each other.

In addition, nutritionists also suggested that the restaurant design exclusive "light meals" and include them in the restaurant's menu. Nutritionist Li Peifen from the Weight Management Center of Peking University Health Science Center taught fellow patients on the spot how to choose ingredients correctly and fully consume 2 servings of vegetables, 1 to 2 servings of staple foods, and 2 to 3 servings of medium- and low-fat beans, eggs, fish, and meat, which together make up about 400 calories; plus a small bowl of soup without the floating oil, to make a "light meal" with a total calorie content of less than 500 calories, which can satisfy the appetite while taking into account nutritional intake.

Nutritionist Li Peifen also said that unbalanced nutritional intake from eating out can easily lead to ineffective weight loss results, while hot pot allows you to decide the ingredients and portion sizes yourself, making it a good choice for patients undergoing weight loss surgery or those who want to lose weight. As long as you know how to choose natural foods that are low in fat and high in protein, such as tofu, non-fried bean curd sheets, fish fillets, etc.; and pair them with a variety of vegetables and high-fiber staple foods, such as pumpkin and taro, and add natural broth to enhance the flavor, and avoid using high-fat and high-salt dipping sauces, you can still lose weight healthily.
