Is going to the gym necessary to lose weight? Study: Don't underestimate the stairs in buildings

If you're really hesitant about exercising, don't just leave it at that! Because there's another simple, do-it-anytime way to easily get some exercise into your day: climbing stairs. Professor Meyer's research team at Geneva Hospital conducted a study on whether going up and down stairs is beneficial to health (Meyer et al., 2010). To this end, he spent three months conducting a study on 77 people, requiring them to climb 21 floors of stairs every day. As a result, the benefits of climbing stairs far exceeded scientists' expectations. Climbing stairs can really help you lose weight.

The participants lost an average of 550 grams in weight and their waist circumference decreased by 1.5 centimeters. When we understand the direct relationship between cardiovascular disease and waist circumference, we will understand how important this research result is. When a person goes up and down the stairs, the calorie counter will start to move in a good direction; each step up is equivalent to consuming 0.11 calories; each step down is equivalent to consuming 0.05 calories.

If a person climbs the stairs for 15 minutes a day, he or she consumes an average of 150 calories; 30 minutes is equivalent to consuming 300 calories - if you climb the stairs continuously for 30 minutes, the number of calories consumed is equal to a croissant. If a person climbs a total of 21 flights of stairs every day, his weight will be stably maintained at a minimum of 2 kg lower than his original weight. Even the laziest people can benefit: in fact, those who take the elevator upstairs and take the stairs downstairs can lose at least 1 kilogram per year.

The health benefits of stair climbing go beyond this, especially as it is known to prevent cardiovascular disease. In 1953, the first study confirming that stair climbing can prevent cardiovascular disease was published in the prestigious scientific journal "The Lancet", but it did not receive any attention.

The study involved bus drivers and ticket inspectors in London. The red buses in London are double-decker. The drivers sit all day; the ticket inspectors go up and down stairs for eight hours a day. Studies show that ticket inspectors are less than half as likely to suffer from cardiovascular disease as drivers. Professor Morris, the leader of this study, said that he believed the sharp increase in the incidence of cardiovascular disease was closely related to our lifestyle.

Subsequently, other scientific studies revealed why and how climbing stairs can improve health. In fact, it was observed that those who decided to take the stairs instead of the elevator had a significantly lower blood pressure. It is important to note that their blood pressure rises when climbing stairs, but once they stop moving, their blood pressure drops and remains at a lower level. High blood pressure can lead to a number of medical conditions, including myocardial infarction and hemiplegia, which is truly disastrous, so we all understand the benefits of engaging in activities that can lower blood pressure.

In Professor Mayer's study in Switzerland, the blood pressure of all participants decreased by an average of 1.8 percent. In addition, this exercise can reduce the cholesterol that gradually clogs blood vessels by 3 percent. Over three months, participants' lung capacity increased by 6 percent, allowing for better oxygenation of tissues.

Therefore, regular daily physical activity is an obligation - I would even say it is almost a right of life to maintain good health. As I mentioned in the introduction, thirty minutes of exercise a day can reduce the risk of fatal diseases—whether it’s cardiovascular disease, cancer, or Alzheimer’s—by forty percent.

In fact, this can be done just by using the stairs in your home or company. bring it on. We were able to climb 21 flights of stairs in a day without any difficulty. Improving physical fitness and respiratory function, lowering blood pressure and bad cholesterol, eliminating fat, reducing waist circumference, and maintaining stable results are all rewards you can get by giving up elevators and escalators. The stakes are so high, so don't waste a minute and get started.
