However, Xie Mingjia, CEO of the Weight Management and Diabetes Health Management Center of Changhua Christian Hospital and physician of the Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism, said that most of the medical research on leptin and weight loss in the literature are small-scale studies, and it is currently impossible to prove how much sleep is needed to achieve the maximum secretion of leptin, or even how much weight loss effect is achieved.

Leptin, like other hormones such as growth hormone and cortisol, has a secretion amount that changes regularly during the day and night. If the regularity of secretion is disrupted, it will affect the body's functions and lead to obesity. If you do not get enough sleep for a long time, especially if you need to work in shifts, your hormone secretion will be disrupted and the calories you eat cannot be completely consumed and metabolized. Obesity will naturally occur, and even diabetes and heart disease will not be spared.

Domestic weight loss experts say that obesity cannot be eliminated by sleeping alone. It is still necessary to adjust factors such as lifestyle, diet and exercise to truly "enjoy thinness."

In general, whether you are working the day shift or the night shift, as long as you have a regular work and rest schedule and get enough sleep every day, you can increase the secretion of leptin during sleep, allowing it to play its due function of suppressing appetite, which "may" be more helpful for people who want to lose weight to control their weight. Generally speaking, the physiological adaptation period for switching between day shift and night shift takes at least one week.

However, Dr. Xie Mingjia said that the causes of obesity come from lifestyle habits, diet and diseases. It is impossible to easily lose weight by simply changing sleep habits. In addition, the weight loss effect of leptin is not as good as imagined. Even if sufficient sleep can stimulate leptin secretion, some people's fat cells cannot interact with leptin, making these leptins "invalid", making it difficult to achieve the expected weight loss goals of suppressing appetite and calorie consumption.

Jiang Shuwen, a nutritionist at the Nutrition Department of Wan Fang Hospital, believes that sleeping too long will lower the body's basal metabolic rate and reduce food intake, which will make it easier to lose weight.
