Eating salty and drinking sugary drinks during Chinese New Year can make you fat

During the Chinese New Year, many people's homes are filled with hot pot, dried meat, melon seeds, squid shreds and other heavy-tasting meals or snacks. The more they eat, the more they want to quench their thirst. However, foreign studies have found that a diet too salty will increase the intake of sugary drinks. On average, for every gram of salt consumed, 17 to 27 milliliters of sugary drinks will be consumed more, increasing the risk of obesity, cardiovascular disease and children's short growth. The Nutrition Group of the Tung Foundation cited a study published in the journal Pediatrics by Deakin University in Australia in 2013, which analyzed the nutrition and physical activity dietary records of 4,283 Australian children aged 2 to 16. It found that the more salt the children ate, the more sugary drinks they drank. On average, for every gram of salt they ate, they would drink 17 milliliters more sugary drinks. Over time, there is a risk of turning them into "little fat kids."

The research team further observed and found that children who drank more than one serving of sugary drinks (about 250 ml) a day had a 26% higher chance of being overweight and obese than children who drank less than one serving.

In addition, a study conducted by the University of London in 2008 in the American Heart Association's journal Hypertension recorded the weekly diet of 1,688 children and adolescents aged 4 to 18, and found that for every extra gram of salt eaten, they would drink about 27 milliliters more sugary drinks. However, if the daily salt intake was halved, the average child could consume about 244 fewer calories from sugary drinks per week.

Nutritionist Xu Huiyu reminds that during the Chinese New Year, people should maintain good eating habits, eat a balanced diet, and eat light dishes.

Eating too much sugar can also increase the incidence of chronic diseases such as obesity, diabetes, and hypertension, and affect children's behaviors such as inattention in learning, depression, hyperactivity, and violence.

Although people feel relaxed during Chinese New Year, the Tung Foundation urges parents to keep a close eye on their children and maintain good eating habits. They should not let their children eat salty food or drink sweet drinks, as this may cause them to lose their appetite after Chinese New Year.
