I can’t lose weight no matter what I do. Is there something wrong with my metabolism?

Taiwan has the highest number of obese people in Asia. Even the government has begun promoting a nationwide weight loss campaign. Losing weight seems to have long been integrated into the lives of Taiwanese people. When it comes to losing weight, some people lose weight easily and proudly, while others cannot lose weight no matter how much they diet or exercise. It makes people wonder if they are using the wrong method or if there is something wrong with their metabolism?

Modern people lead busy and stressful lives and are prone to metabolic syndrome problems.

Modern people lead busy and stressful lives, eat more and exercise less, which leads to obesity and many chronic diseases, resulting in "metabolic syndrome". What is metabolic syndrome? Is being fat considered metabolic syndrome? Nutritionist Lin Yuwei pointed out that although metabolic syndrome is not a disease, it is a warning sign of unhealthy body and can cause a series of complications, including stroke, myocardial infarction, vascular sclerosis, diabetes, cancer, cirrhosis, liver fibrosis and other related diseases.

Metabolic syndrome refers to the phenomenon that the activation of visceral fat leads to abdominal obesity, causing abnormal insulin secretion and thus affecting the body's metabolic function. Once the body's metabolic function declines, problems such as high blood pressure, high blood sugar, and abnormal blood lipids will occur, forming the so-called "metabolic syndrome."

Although the current understanding of obesity among beauty-conscious women is not necessarily equal to the definition of metabolic syndrome, obesity and "insulin resistance" are indeed the main factors causing metabolic syndrome. Obesity and "insulin resistance" can both cause abnormal carbohydrate and fat metabolism. Abnormal insulin function, coupled with excessive insulin secretion, can cause abnormal blood fat metabolism, such as high triglycerides, high low-density cholesterol, too little high-density cholesterol, abnormal blood coagulation, and vascular sclerosis. In addition, obesity around the waist is a warning sign that deserves attention. It means that there is too much fat in the internal organs, which makes insulin resistance more likely.

5 indicators of metabolic syndrome

Even if your weight is within the normal range, you may still be at high risk of developing metabolic syndrome. There are 5 risk factors for metabolic syndrome:

1. Waist circumference ≥ 90 cm for boys or ≥ 80 cm for girls

2. Blood pressure ≥130/85 mmHg

3. Fasting blood glucose ≥ 100 mg/dl

4. Triglyceride ≥150mg/dl

5. High-density lipoprotein <40mg/dl for boys or <50mg/dl for girls

If you have 3 or more of the above, it means you have metabolic syndrome. Therefore, metabolic problems should not be viewed solely from the perspective of body shape, but should be examined from all aspects.

In addition, nutritionist Lin Yuwei emphasized that many people often blindly follow the popular weight loss methods, such as the low-fat, high-carbohydrate diet that was popular abroad a while ago. As a result, they get fatter and fatter, and their bodies also show dangerous indicators of metabolic syndrome. Nutritionist Lin Yuwei said that a balanced diet is the most important. Excessive carbohydrates will affect the endocrine of insulin, which will lead to metabolic abnormalities and fat accumulation. However, carbohydrates are essential nutrients for the human body and cannot be arbitrarily eliminated from the food. Otherwise, weight loss will not only fail, but also disrupt the natural metabolic mechanism, making the road to weight loss even more difficult.
