How important is sleep? Looking at your figure in the mirror is the biggest proof that lack of sleep not only makes your facial skin worse and causes dark circles and acne, but it is also the beginning of a path to gaining weight. A recent study published by the University of California, USA, explained from brain wave scans that lack of sleep can cause weight gain. This is because the brain releases messages to eat high-calorie foods, making it difficult for people to control their appetite and causing them to gain weight the more they eat. If you lack sleep or suffer from insomnia for a long time, not only will your metabolism deteriorate and your skin become bad, you may even like to eat high-calorie foods more and run the risk of gaining weight. (Photo/taken from New York's "Daily News") According to a report by New York's Daily News, sleep cycles and sleep hours have long been speculated to be related to weight gain or loss, but the exact reason is still unclear. However, the results of a recent study by the University of California found that the area of the brain responsible for controlling complex and important decisions, including food intake, becomes sluggish due to lack of sleep. Not getting enough sleep makes you love eating high-calorie junk food! In the study, participants underwent two brain scans, one after a complete sleep cycle and one after a full night of sleep. The next day, they were asked to choose what they wanted to eat from 80 different foods and control the portion size themselves. The results of the tomography scan found that the areas in the frontal lobe of the brain responsible for appetite and taste had significantly different effects. The group that did not sleep had an increased desire to "overeat" compared to the other group. They tend to choose high-calorie foods such as donuts, pizza, and hamburgers, which also supports the theory that lack of sleep can cause obesity. To control weight, the amount of sleep is the key! Past sleep research at the University of Chicago in the United States has pointed out that long-term lack of sleep can significantly change the secretion levels of leptin and cortisol, two main hormones that regulate hunger in the body. It whets the appetite, and even if the body does not need calories, the brain will still sense that there is insufficient calories and ask people to keep eating. Therefore, Matthew Walker, a professor of psychology at the University of California, Berkeley and one of the authors of the study, also pointed out in the journal Nature Communications that adequate sleep every day is absolutely an important key to controlling weight. People who want to lose weight or are afraid of getting fat should not underestimate the potential effects of staying up late and insomnia on the body. |
