Too thin to get pregnant? Doctor: Insufficient body fat may lead to ovulation

Many people want to give birth to a dragon baby in the Year of the Dragon. Xiaojia, who just got married, is one of them. However, she has been unable to fulfill her wish. Some doctors think that she is too thin and it will affect her chances of conception, so they ask her to gain some weight. Can being fat or thin really affect conception? Gynecologists say that insufficient body fat can indeed lead to hormonal imbalances, with the most serious consequence being the failure to ovulate, making pregnancy impossible in this situation.

In order to get pregnant, you must have menstruation. Insufficient body fat will lead to hormonal imbalance. The most serious result is anovulation, which will lead to infertility.

Li Shiming, an obstetrician and gynecologist at Zhongshan Hospital, said that a woman's weight has no absolute relationship with pregnancy, but female hormones need fat to drive their function. Therefore, those with too low body fat may suffer from hormonal imbalance, causing the follicles in the ovaries to atrophy without normal maturation. In more serious cases, it may even shut down the ovulation mechanism, and pregnancy will be impossible without ovulation.

Such patients are rare in clinical practice. Dr. Li Shiming has met patients who are on extreme diets. For example, a young girl worked as a model. In order to maintain her figure, she dieted excessively and gradually even stopped having her menstruation. She did not take it seriously when she was young, but later when she wanted to get married and have children, she found that she could not adjust back. She would even feel nauseous if she tried to gain weight deliberately. This serious hormone imbalance not only causes infertility due to anovulation, but also the risk of premature osteoporosis.

However, Dr. Li Shiming emphasized that there are many factors that prevent successful pregnancy. He said that if menstruation still occurs, even if the body is thin, it is not the main cause of infertility. The couple should go to the hospital for examination together. Common infertility factors now include advanced age or other gynecological diseases. In addition, it may also be that the husband has insufficient sperm count or poor sperm motility. Only by being positive can pregnancy be achieved.
