What is the reason for menstruation after amenorrhea?

What happens when menstruation comes back after amenorrhea?

Amenorrhea refers to the menstrual cycle being prolonged beyond the normal time range and the ovaries not ovulating normally. Menstruation after amenorrhea is generally caused by abnormal ovarian function, hormone level fluctuations, emotional stress, disease factors or drug effects.

1. Ovarian dysfunction

The ovaries are the organs in a woman's body that produce eggs. If the ovaries are not functioning properly, this can lead to irregular ovulation or loss of the ability to ovulate, which can cause amenorrhea. When ovarian function is restored or reactivated, ovulation and menstruation may occur again. This usually happens during puberty or menopause.

2. Fluctuating hormone levels

A woman's menstrual cycle is regulated by fluctuations in the levels of estrogen and progesterone. When these hormone levels are unstable or change, it can cause a longer or shorter menstrual cycle, or amenorrhea. Once hormone levels are balanced again, menstruation will return.

3. Emotional stress

Emotional factors may also affect the menstrual cycle. When emotional stress is high, it may affect the normal function of the pituitary gland and hypothalamus, thereby affecting the secretion of estrogen and progesterone, leading to changes in the menstrual cycle. When the mood stabilizes, menstruation may come again.

4. Disease factors or drug effects

Some diseases or medications may also cause changes in the menstrual cycle. For example, diseases such as thyroid disease, polycystic ovary syndrome, and endometriosis, as well as medications such as oral contraceptives and hormone replacement therapy, may affect the menstrual cycle. When these diseases or medications are effectively treated or stopped, menstruation may come again.

Menstruation after amenorrhea is a normal phenomenon and in most cases will not have adverse effects on women's health. However, if the menstrual cycle is irregular for a long time or there is dysmenorrhea or menorrhagia, it is recommended to seek medical attention in time to rule out diseases.
