What is MRI? How to read adenomyosis MRI?

1. MRI imaging can also be selected for the diagnosis of adenomyosis. Comparison before and after menstruation shows changes in the image, which is of great significance for diagnosis. If you have adenomyosis, the MRI image shows a low-intensity band signal surrounded by a strong echo of the normal endometrium, an uneven echo band with a thickness of >5mm, and strong echo signals of varying sizes can be seen when there is bleeding in the lesion.

2. Imaging examination is the most effective means of preoperative diagnosis of this disease. The sensitivity of vaginal ultrasound examination is 80%, and the specificity can reach 74%, which is more accurate than the abdominal probe. In case of adenomyosis, B-ultrasound can show that the uterus is uniformly enlarged and the echo is uneven. In case of adenomyoma, B-ultrasound can show that the uterus is unevenly enlarged, locally raised, and the lesion is heterogeneous and highly echogenic.

3. MRI can objectively understand the location and range of the lesion before surgery, which is very helpful in deciding the treatment method. Diffuse adenomyosis MRI shows diffuse thickening of the uterine junction zone on T2WI; localized adenomyosis shows a low-signal mass shadow with a signal similar to the junction zone on T2WI, with blurred boundaries.

4. If the patient is young and the symptoms are not severe, symptomatic treatment can be used. Progesterone, androgen, etc. can help alleviate the symptoms. If the symptoms are severe, hysterectomy can be performed, but the ovaries should be preserved as much as possible; patients with adenomyosis can do some exercises that consume less physical energy, such as aerobic exercise: yoga, Yangko dance, walking, etc. are all good choices.
