Do uterine fibroids need treatment?

Do uterine fibroids need treatment?

Uterine fibroids are common benign tumors in gynecology, mainly composed of uterine smooth muscle and connective tissue. Whether uterine fibroids need treatment depends mainly on the size and location of the fibroids, as well as the effect on menstruation. If a woman has fibroids under the uterine mucosa and the fibroids are larger than 5 cm, then even if there are no symptoms, surgical resection is required. If a woman's uterine fibroids are smaller than three centimeters and her menstruation is normal, then she does not need treatment, but can simply undergo a follow-up ultrasound examination.

What are the drugs for uterine fibroids?

There are several drugs for treating uterine fibroids. The first is drugs that relieve symptoms, mainly androgens. Androgens can counteract the estrogen in our female body, causing the endometrium to shrink, and the most important thing is to reduce the amount of menstruation. There are also drugs that shrink uterine fibroids. Among the drugs is mifepristone, which is generally used before fibroid surgery or during perimenopause. There is also a drug called gnrha, which is also used to shrink uterine fibroids before surgery.

Can uterine fibroids become cancerous?

Most uterine fibroids are benign and have a very low chance of becoming cancerous, but the possibility of cancer cannot be completely ruled out. If the fibroids grow again in postmenopausal women, or grow very quickly in a short period of time, the chance of malignancy is higher. If this happens, surgical treatment should be performed in a timely manner. The most reliable basis for confirming whether uterine fibroids have become cancerous is to remove the fibroids and send them for pathological examination, and then decide on further treatment based on the examination results.
