What causes thick endometrium?

Thick endometrium may be a physiological phenomenon, or it may be caused by drug effects, polycystic ovary syndrome, abnormal uterine bleeding due to ovulatory disorders, endometrial cancer, etc., and requires targeted treatment under the guidance of a doctor.

1. Physiological phenomenon: During the entire menstrual cycle of women, the endometrium will change with the changes in ovarian hormones. The endometrium is thickest before menstruation, generally reaching eight to ten millimeters, and the endometrium is thinnest after menstruation. If a B-ultrasound is performed before menstruation and the endometrium is found to be relatively thick, between eight and ten centimeters, it is generally a normal phenomenon and does not require special treatment, indicating that menstruation is about to come.

2. Polycystic ovary syndrome: Due to the high level of androgen in the body, the menstrual cycle is prolonged and the endometrium is thickened. You can take cyproterone acetate, norgestrel, norgestrel, etc. orally as prescribed by your doctor for treatment.

3. Abnormal uterine bleeding due to ovulation disorder: It is common in cases where the endometrium overgrows under the action of estrogen, and there is no progesterone resistance, resulting in ovulation disorder. The endometrium does not change during the secretory period, and the endometrium will be particularly thick, generally exceeding 12 mm, which can easily lead to heavy bleeding when it falls off. In order to prevent this phenomenon from happening, patients can be supplemented with progesterone drugs, and take dydrogesterone or progesterone, norethindrone, etc. orally under the guidance of a doctor.

4. Drug effects: Long-term oral use of estrogen drugs, such as estradiol valerate tablets, can easily lead to endometrial thickening, which can easily develop into endometrial polyps or endometrial cancer. Therefore, women who use estrogen drugs for a long time must follow the doctor's advice and take progestin drugs such as progesterone, norethindrone, and norgestrel at the same time.

5. Endometrial cancer: Under the long-term effect of estrogen without progesterone resistance, the endometrium overproliferates and then becomes cancerous. Patients are often accompanied by obesity, hypertension, diabetes, infertility or sterility. Endometrial pathological examination can confirm the diagnosis. After the diagnosis is confirmed, surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy can be performed according to the doctor's advice.

Long-term tamoxifen treatment after breast cancer surgery may also cause endometrial thickening. If you feel unwell, you can seek medical attention and treatment in time to avoid worsening of the condition.
