What is the process of medical abortion? Medical abortion is divided into 5 steps

Medical abortion, also known as drug abortion, refers to the use of Xiyin (mifepristone tablets) plus misoprostol to terminate early pregnancy. In recent years, it has been widely used in clinical practice and is a very popular drug for preventing early pregnancy. In the early stages of pregnancy, artificial abortion is achieved by injection or medication without surgery. The use of drugs to terminate pregnancy is the latest development in the past 20 years. Currently, the commonly used drugs are mifepristone tablets (Ru486) and prostaglandins. The former causes degeneration and necrosis of the uterine decidua and softens the cervix, while the latter causes the uterus to contract and promote the expulsion of the embryo.

The general procedure for medical abortion is as follows:

(1) Strict screening before medication, including medical history, full physical and gynecological examinations, laboratory tests such as urine pregnancy test, vaginal cleanliness, Trichomonas and fungi, blood routine and blood type, and B-ultrasound examination when necessary.

(2) The doctor explains in detail the method of taking the medication, the efficacy of the medication, and possible side effects, and the medication can only be used after obtaining consent.

(3) Currently commonly used dose: Mifepristone dosage is 150-200 mg, which can be taken all at once or in divided doses within 3 days. On the 3rd day, go to the hospital to add prostaglandin preparations: 1 mg of Carprostol suppository placed in the vagina or 600 micrograms of misoprostol taken orally. Observe in the hospital for 6 hours.

(4) Monitoring during abortion: During the hospitalization period, in addition to paying attention to blood pressure, pulse, and drug side effects, all urine and feces must be kept in a clean bedpan. A dedicated person will check and record the presence of a gestational sac and the time of its expulsion, the size of the gestational sac, and the amount of bleeding. If there is active bleeding before or after the expulsion of the gestational sac, uterotonics can be given or curettage can be performed immediately to stop the bleeding.

(5) If the fetal sac has not been expelled after 6 hours of observation and the bleeding is not severe, the patient can go home and follow up at the doctor’s appointment date. If tissue is expelled at home, it must be brought to the doctor for examination.

Although miscarriage is a "short confinement period", it should be recuperated in the same way as the "long confinement period" of full-term delivery. Nutritious and easily digestible foods such as eggs, milk, ribs, chicken, and fish should be consumed. It is forbidden to use cold water to wash your hair, bathe, wash your hands, or wash clothes and vegetables, otherwise the stimulation of cold water can induce arthritis, leaving behind pain in the joints and muscles affected by the cold.
