What is the risk of pregnancy after miscarriage?

After a successful abortion, both the patient and the provider will feel relieved. The patient believes that the annoying unwanted pregnancy is over and there is no need to worry anymore; this is a medical procedure and it may not be so easy to get pregnant again, at least not in the short term.

The surgery provider believes that the patient has suffered some pain and will pay attention to it in the future. In addition, the doctor's instructions include avoiding sexual intercourse and bathing for one month. The important thing now is to prevent postoperative bleeding or infection. Other problems can be delayed to be solved in future follow-up visits. Therefore, it is not uncommon for patients to come for another abortion shortly after a miscarriage. Some unwanted pregnancies even occur when menstruation has not yet resumed after the abortion.

Foreign data show that ovulation can occur as early as the 11th day after abortion. Domestic data show that the average time for menstruation to resume after early pregnancy abortion is 33.8 days, and about 83% of women resume ovulation in the first cycle after abortion. Other data report that 78.05% of women resume menstruation within 30 days after abortion, and 2.33% of women become pregnant again before menstruation due to failure to take contraceptive measures in time.

Even with medication to prevent early and mid-term pregnancy (10-16 weeks of pregnancy), the time it takes for menstruation to resume after abortion is about 30 days. In addition, a survey in 1990 showed that 52.0% of young women after abortion said that they could not stop having sex after the operation, had no urgent need for contraception, and did not care about having another abortion. In 2006, a survey of unmarried teenagers showed that 38.5% had repeated abortions, of which 23.5% had repeated abortions within a year.

Therefore, the rapid recovery of menstruation and ovulation in women after abortion, the lack of awareness of the hazards of abortion, and the lack of attention to the timely implementation of contraceptive measures after abortion make the risk of unwanted pregnancy after abortion in the population much higher than the patients and surgical providers imagine.
